Coronavirus is taking its toll on our island

Unfortunately in Malta, when it rains it pours. Let's now speak about the elephant in the room and that elephant is called the coronavirus. Now with 139 cases confirmed on the island and having 1 severe. The Health officials are trying to make the most out of this situation but the virus is here to stay for at least another 3 months and it is here to replicate and jump from one person to the other. What we hope for Malta is that we do not end up in a situation like Italy as they will be the end for the Maltese race. Health Minister, Dr. Chris Fearne has announced a partial lockdown starting Saturday saying that:

"The new set of measures will affect 118,000 people and that individuals under 65 with a medical condition will be individually informed by letter from the Government’s Chief Medical doctor. This also applied to relatives living with them."

According to world meters at the time of writing there has been already 597.458 coronavirus cases worldwide with 27,370 deaths. That amounts to 5 per cent. Out of the half million cases we have 133,373 recovered. Active cases so far we have 436,715 with 413,156 being in mild condition and the other 23,559 in serious or critical condition. Out of 597,458 the total cases we had 160,743 are closed.

If we take a look at statistics by country we have the USA in first place, meaning recording the highest number of cases to date 104,256. Out of these cases there were 1704 deaths, 2,525 recovered cases, 100,027 active cases and 2494 in critical condition. The most interesting is the total cases per 1 million population because you cannot compare USA and Italy like with like. You won't be making a fair comparison as the total population for USA stands to date at 327.8 million and the population of Italy stands at 60.48 million. So USA has a total cases per million population of 315.

In second place we have Italy with 86,498 cases confirmed to date. Out of these cases there were 9134 deaths, 10,950 recovered cases, 66,414 active cases and 3,732 in critical condition. The total cases per 1 million population is that of 1431. Italy had another record yesterday of the most deaths in a single day (24 hours). It amounted to 919 that means that every two minutes someone in Italy died of the virus.

In third place we have China. What has been happening to China? Did the virus really come out of China? The good news for china is that infecting all the world with her virus, she is now recovering and recording daily the least amounts of deaths which yesterday amounted only to five. China total cases are 81,340 and that number has barely change in the past week. Out of these cases there were 3,292 deaths. 74,488 are totally recovered, 3,460 are active cases and 1,034 are in serious or critical condition. The most important is the total cases per million population. China having its population at 1.3 billion their number only 57 compared to that of Italy which is more than 25 times larger.

Where do things stand for Malta? Malta at the moment is in the middle of the table but having only a population of a half million the total cases per million population is more than that of China and stands at 315.
